Plaka was also nice - lots of hilly streets with airy restaurants and cafes where we got lunch and wandered around. The rest of Athens is not that pretty - it is a big city, theft is common, and its not that clean. I was glad to see the ancient ruins, but I would probably not go back. Overall in Greece, I loved Santorini, but would find other places in Greece to see if I went back again.
Athens was our 6th stop. The big sites in Athens are the Acropolis with all the giant ruins, and the town around it, called Plaka. To get there, we took the subway, which was very nice, as it was updated for the Athens Olympics! We walked up the giant hill to the Acropolis, where we saw the Parthenon, Athena's Temple, the Amphitheatre, and many other giant ancient ruins, most of which were under construction, but still such incredible sites. Again, we didn't have a tour, and I think we would have learned more with a tour - when in doubt - ruins = tour! After that, we saw the Temple of Zeus the Olympian, the Ancient Library, and many other temples and monuments. Athens - on the way up to the Acropolis The Ampitheatre Entrance to the main Acropolis area I don't know how to caption this... Tiny people, big ruins! The Parthenon Temple of Athena - for the ladies Temple of Zeus Mmmmm Greek Salad!!! More ruins and sky Athens definitely allowed for great photo-ops!
